Specialty Cartridges & Housing
Water treatment and filtration systems are designed to remove a number of contaminants from your water, including iron and lead deposits, as well as high levels of sodium. They can even work to correct pH levels in your home water supply. However, in some cases, your water may be contaminated with a more advanced and potentially dangerous carcinogen like arsenic or nitrate. If this is the case, specialty cartridges and housings should be used.
Whether you know for sure that you have high levels of these chemicals or you need to have your water tested to find out, contact Wickstrom Plumbing, Heating & Cooling today. Our technicians provide a full range of testing, water treatment installation, and filtration services to customers in the Boise area.
Specialty Cartridges
The most common reason you might need a specialty cartridge is to demineralize or deionize your water. This is done with DI resin cartridges that perfectly balance the water in your home before it can be used. If you have hard water, softening is also important and can be done in conjunction with a DI Resin Cartridge. Water softening removes all excess debris and contaminants from your water.
If you do use a DI cartridge, however, it should be rebalanced before anyone drinks the water. Not only is distilled water unsafe for your consumption, it can be dangerous for pets and even some of your house plants. Distilled water lacks many of the necessary elements necessary to provide healthy hydration. A reverse osmosis home water treatment system rebalances the water to make it safe for drinking.
Other cartridges you may need include nitrate and arsenic filtration cartridges. Abnormally high levels of nitrates and sulfates can be reduced with nitrate resin cartridges, while arsenic III and V are filtered by arsenic targeting cartridges. These cartridges are generally only needed if your arsenic levels are above the recommended maximum for drinking water (which is fairly rare in most developed areas).
Water Testing
Your cartridges are a very important line of defense against carcinogens in your water. However, when you add new layers of protection, you must also make sure you maintain a strict maintenance schedule to keep all of your water filtration systems functioning properly. Having your filters and cartridges checked regularly will reduce the chance of a clog or malfunctioning treatment system.
Additionally, you should have your water tested regularly for heightened levels of all contaminants, especially those that require specialty cartridges. Most nitrate and arsenic testing is done once every 2–3 years, but if you know your levels are high already, more frequent testing is recommended.
