Propane Furnace Efficiency

There are many types of furnaces on the market, so why choose propane over gas, oil or electricity? For starters, the average cost of propane ranges from 30–50% less per BTU than electricity. And some high efficiency propane furnaces convert 97% of the fuel they consume into heat energy, so there’s the potential to save tremendous amounts of money each month.

In addition to the cost issue, propane furnaces are built to be able to produce a warmer air supply with temperatures of up to 120 degrees F. While you won’t need your air to be that warm, the ability to heat it to that degree makes it possible to produce more heat with less fuel during the coldest months of the winter. And of course, if the electricity were to go out at any point in time, a propane furnace would still provide reliable heat whereas an electric model would be unavailable without a generator or battery backup.

Propane Furnace Installation

When having a new propane furnace installed, there are a few important things to keep in mind. If you already have a furnace that uses a different fuel source, converting it to propane is possible, but it is expensive and the system generally won’t be as efficient as a brand new propane furnace. Additionally, exhaust may be an issue. Usually when switching from electric to propane, the existing exhaust pipes will work fine, but in certain cases you may need to install new exhaust pipes to ensure there are no health or fire risks.

Consider what type of ignition you want as well. Automated ignitions are great, but they may use additional fuel. Electronic ignitions allow you to control how much propane is used and to turn off standing pilot lights, effectively stopping propane use for the summer months when heat isn’t needed.

If you don’t already have air ducts installed in your home, they will be necessary to distribute the heated air from a propane furnace. An air handler is also required, though most new propane furnaces can be installed with an air handler as part of the unit. If you have an existing air conditioner, you can use the same ductwork, though the furnace and AC unit will need to be connected to the same air handler.
