A septic system is more than just a tank in which your sewage is stored. It is a microcosm of a sewage treatment plant, breaking down waste from your home. One or more tanks are connected to the home’s drainage system, usually with a capacity of between 1,000 and 2,000 gallons. These tanks have an inlet for wastewater and an outlet that leads to a leech field, where the filtered water is released.
Solids settle in the tank and are broken down anaerobically. In some systems, as the solids are being broken down, material floats up and through a dividing wall into the next chamber where additional sediment settles. Finally, the relatively clear and clean liquid drains from the system into the drain field.
