Septic System Operation

Homes within the city limits of a major metropolitan area rarely need to worry about where the sewage goes. A drainage system is installed and the sewage goes into a central disposal line. However, for those outside the grid of a public sewer system, a septic system acts as a self–contained sewage treatment plant.

A septic system consists of a large 1,000–2,000 gallon tank with two chambers. Waste is released into the first chamber where the solids settle and are slowly broken down anaerobically. As the scum floats to the surface and the sediment settles, water can leave the first chamber and enter the second. In this second chamber, remaining sediment settles further. Finally, the relatively clear and clean water is funneled into a drain or seepage field where it can be further filtered and broken down by the soil.

Regardless of how your septic system is set up, it is a complicated collection of drainage pipes, tanks and a drainage field and each piece must remain operational at all times.

Septic Contractors

When you choose a contractor to install your new septic system, you want to know they will be available in the future should anything ever happen. That means they should offer ongoing regular maintenance and help you determine the perfect layout for your particular property to minimize future problems. This is often governed by local regulations. The intimate knowledge your contractor will have after installing your system also allows them to quickly diagnose and resolve any issues that may crop up in the future.

The installation process requires a large enough space to install the tank, which is often covered by a concrete slab that will protect it from the elements and animal intrusion. Additionally, a drainage field must be installed to remove the processed waste from the tank, and there needs to be a schedule in place to drain the tank of any excess solids that build up over time. Depending on the type of septic system installed, a pump may also be needed to transport the water from the tank to the leach field.
